Appleyard graduated with honours from Winchester School of Art in 1999. She studied on the Textile Art Degree course and won the Winchester School Of Art Drawing Prize in her final year. After graduating, she returned home to Hastings. She shares a studio with a graphic designer and enjoys the interaction and support structure provided by this creative environment.

In 2004, Appleyard participated in 'Creative Routes', an Arts Council funded professional development programme for Creative Practitioners in Hastings originated by SOCO (south Coast Artists) which culminated in a project showcase exhibition at Hastings Museum.
